Avon Firefighters Participate in Whole Blood Field Transfusion Protocol Training with Canton Fire Department

AVON — Chief David Charest is pleased to share that Avon firefighters recently participated in training, delivered virtually by the Canton Fire Department, following the launch of the new Field Transfusion Paramedic Program.

The Field Transfusion Paramedic Program was announced by Canton Fire in February. The program significantly advances the treatment of trauma patients by allowing trained Canton firefighters to transfuse Low Titer O Whole Blood (LTOWB) to trauma patients at the scene of an emergency or during transport to the hospital.

Through the program, Canton Fire’s trained Field Transfusion Paramedics will also respond as mutual aid to assist other EMS providers and paramedics in the region with trauma transports.

The recent video-based training introduced Avon firefighters to the program and the procedures for requesting a response by Canton Fire’s Field Transfusion Paramedics. The training also covered EMS protocol for treating patients in scenarios where whole blood field transfusion may be involved.

“The Whole Blood Field Transfusion Paramedic Program is a valuable addition to our EMS capabilities in the region and we are pleased to have this additional lifesaving resource at our disposal,” Chief Charest said. “I would like to thank the members of the Canton Fire Department for sharing their expertise on the program with our personnel.”

In addition to the Whole Blood Field Transfusion Paramedic Program training, Avon Fire personnel also trained on the annual protocol update provided by the state Office of Emergency Medical Services. This annual protocol review addresses any changes to medication or treatment provided by EMTs and paramedics in the field across the Commonwealth. The training was provided by Torrey Enterprises, a local EMS education provider.
